The Power of Storytelling
“Throughout human history, storytelling has been the main medium by which we communicate morals, history, and tradition. Every culture across the world and time uses their own evolving stories, myths, and legends which reveal their individual values and concerns. When you think of Rumi, you most likely think of poetry, but he was also a storyteller and used stories and imagery from the old testament often in order to convey his wisdom. This is human tradition we still carry with us today. Stories and folktales put you in a character’s place, they ask “what would you do?” or reveal the ease with which we may fall into conflict, and help to avoid it. In the modern world it is important to listen to the stories of others in order to build empathy, to put yourself in their shoes, whether it is refugees fleeing war, the sick, the poor, or even those that one considers the foe.”
