October 2022: Chasing The Shadow of Love

چونکه عاشق اوست تو خاموش باش

او‌ چه گوشت میکشد تو گوش باش

“When the Lover is Divine, stay silent —

when He is dragging you by your ear- become the Ear!”

Reflection on the Quote:

A message from Dr. Fariba Enteshari, Founder & Executive Director

Rumi tells us a strange story about a hunter who is foolish enough to run after the shadow of the bird of love on the earth and keep shooting arrows at it, not knowing that the bird of love is flying up in heaven.

We are often witnessing the shadow of love on the earth. This is one of the points that Rumi would like us to explore.

Our representative is this hunter, who is skilled in hunting, so he hunts, even shooting at the bird of love- a testimony of our ignorance when we do not recognize love in the dark alleys of life. This hunter is good at his craft, but illiterate in the language of love. This is an indication that either we do not know or we forget that love is a divine quality.

Love may enter into our lives by the grace of our higher nature but we can still be foolish enough to ignore it, reject it, or like this hunter, shoot arrows at it.

We can chase love for many reasons but only those reasons that arise from selfless qualities should guide the path of our lives.

The language of love is the language of the higher Self. To love with an inflated ego is more like a possessive act done for self gratification than love for someone else.

Love is a divine quality that leads to an Unknown - an Unknown that can elevate our being into Union with the Divine.

I believe this is Rumi’s way of telling us that as long as we are on the earth we need to anchor our love, otherwise all we are left with is a phantom of love.

Let us all become the Ear and listen to the call of love that we may awaken to answer the song of the bird of heaven.
