Farsi Fridays: August 5, 2022

Though it is now translated in to hundreds of languages, Rumi’s original work was written in Farsi – including his famous Mathnawi. Each Friday we send out a word or phrase, in Farsi, that can be found in Rumi’s work. You can listen to the pronunciation and learn the meaning of Farsi words that often appear in Rumi's poetry.

Farsi Fridays is an opportunity to learn Rumi's language and better understand his wisdoms.

صبر, or patience, in Rumi’s poetry is analogous to the drop of sand in an oyster that becomes a pearl. Patience transforms our spirit quality. When we do not judge a book simply by the cover, we are willing, like a mystic fish, to seek transformation. When we are patient, we become the seeker, and we cannot search without patience.

صبر

(sabr)

“patience”

Below is a moment from Rumi’s Mathnawi where he uses the word صبر (“patience”)…

هرکه صبر آورد گردون بر رود

هرکه حلوا خورد واپس‌تر رود

“With patience you can reach galaxies

With appetite for this world comes regression!”

~Rumi
